Night time Co-op Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Night Time Co-op is a creative night-time third space that operates out of our cafe after we’ve closed for the day. The initiative is built around a framework of mutual stewardship, community wealth building, and an anti-capitalist business model.

    Our core foundational goals include:

    • Providing an affordable, non-prohibitive space for a diverse mix of community groups to co-exist.

    • Protecting an historic Cork location and tapping into its legacy of community building and radical activism.

    • Supporting My Goodness in paying ethical wages, its zero-waste practices, and providing affordable food.

    • Cultivating a culture focused on analogue, hand-made, and in-person connections.

  • The ideal membership subscription is structured at 20 euro per month or 5 euro per week.

As a subscriber, you gain access to the following perks:

    • A 10 percent discount on all Night Time Co-op workshops and events.

    • A 10 percent discount on all beverages in the My Goodness Café

    • An invite to our monthly Calendar Making Parties and general use of the space.

    • Liability insurance coverage automatically included while renting the space.

Note: You do not need to maintain a continuous membership to host an event; you can choose to subscribe for only the specific month you plan to utilise the space. Subscribers are also welcome to contribute more than the 20 euro fee if they have the financial means, though no additional perks are offered for higher tiers.

  • To book and rent a room, you must hold an active Night Time Co-op subscription. If you are a group, only the main event organiser needs to be a subscriber; the subscription cost can be split internally among your group members at your own discretion.

The room rental rates are charged in addition to the subscription fee and are priced at 20 euro for the first hour and 15 euro for each subsequent hour.

When it comes to event formatting and attendance:

    • organisers have total discretion over whether their event is completely free, donation-based, ticketed, or a "pass the hat" structure.

    • If an event charges significant ticket prices (20 euro or more), a percentage of the proceeds must be taken to support the space.

    • Event hosts are entirely responsible for promoting their own events.

    • Organisers retain complete control over their event attendance; guest lists do not need to be processed or shared with the Co-op or the Council of Moms.

  • Because the Night Time Co-op relies on collaborative planning, booking space follows a specific process:

    1. Membership: Ensure you are registered as an active member.

    2. Propose: Submit your formal event idea by filling out our digital application via Google Forms. (This is emailed in advance to members)

    3. Review: The Council of Moms reviews all submissions and assembles an initial draft working calendar and meeting agenda.

    4. Pitch and Finalize: Attend the monthly Calendar Making Party to give a brief, 2-minute presentation of your event. The final calendar slots and logistics are collectively confirmed at the meeting via group consent and consensus.

Please note: Submitting a Google Form does not automatically guarantee event approval or a calendar slot; scheduling is only finalised in person at the monthly party.

  • Calendar Making Parties are monthly meetings held on a mid-month Monday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Their purpose is to collectively organise logistics, review proposed schedules, and resolve conflicts to build the upcoming month's schedule. The resulting schedule is turned into a beautiful physical calendar displayed in the cafe, functioning as a collaborative work of art alongside rotating local artists.

Attendance is mandatory for any member during the specific month they wish to book the space or run an event. However, you do not need to attend every single month if you aren't hosting. All members are explicitly welcome to attend any Calendar Making Parties to hear about upcoming events, hold the community accountable to proper space usage, or simply participate in the planning process.

  • The Council of Moms is a group of 3 to 4 trusted individuals responsible for reviewing incoming event proposals, constructing draft calendars, and overseeing the monthly Calendar Parties.

A Note on the Name: The term "Mom" is not restrictive to any heteronormative or patriarchal definition. Within the Night Time Co-op, motherhood is viewed as both a skill and an identity centered on care. Anyone can embody motherhood and serve on the council regardless of gender identity or whether they have children.

The council is currently closed to new members during our initial summer trial period to establish solid footing and protect the space.

  • Both our upstairs and downstairs spaces are open for booking. They can be rented completely independently, meaning two separate events may coincide at the same time. The maximum capacity of the entire building is strictly capped at 72 people total across both floors.

Standard booking hours run from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm every evening, with the future possibility of family-friendly daytime slots on Mondays and Tuesdays. To remain respectful of our neighbours on all sides, events must conclude by 11:00 pm and remain clear of excessive noise (No raves sorry!).

    • Kitchen & Food: Kitchen access is not universally included; it is evaluated on a group-by-group basis and limited to organisers who possess verified kitchen experience. In complete alignment with the cafe business's overarching ethos, any and all meals or food elements prepared or served within the space must be strictly vegan.

    • Alcohol: The premises does not currently hold an alcohol license.

    • Storage: The cafe has highly limited space, meaning no permanent storage is available for recurring event equipment. organisers can request temporary storage from neighbours or utilise the physical community noticeboard to source nearby alternatives.

  • Financial barriers will never exclude anyone from participating in the Night Time Co-op. If the standard weekly or monthly fee is prohibitive, members can coordinate alternative payment methods with the organisers or the Council of Moms. This includes contributing through time, skill-sharing, volunteering as a nighttime space steward, or assisting with administrative tasks in lieu of a monetary fee.

If you simply wish to support the initiative without hosting a group or running an event, you are incredibly welcome to join. Non-hosting members can freely utilise our physical noticeboard, attend all Calendar Making Parties, and make full use of the workshop and café discounts.

    • Cancellations: If an event must be cancelled at the last minute, the Co-op will handle it on a case-by-case basis, with the long-term goal of implementing a waiting list to quickly fill vacant calendar slots.

    • Impromptu Bookings: We cannot facilitate impromptu events for unbooked nights right now. During these early trial stages, we are taking things one month at a time, though flexibility for impromptu bookings may open up in the future as trust is established.

    • Managing Discounts: Event ticket discounts are handled directly by the event hosts. To facilitate this, the Night Time Co-op can provide a list of all current active members to all organisers every month upon request.

    • Communication & Finances: General announcements and schedules are managed through email and WhatsApp. All subscription invoices and financial transactions are securely processed via Square as an extension of the My Goodness business account.

  • Yes, monthly rollover bookings are permitted. However, if you run a recurring event, you are still required to regularly attend the monthly Calendar Making Parties to maintain community accountability and ensure your space usage aligns with collective stewardship requirements. Finding the exact ratio and balance between recurring and isolated events will be a continuous learning process that we evaluate as we go. We are fully committed to sharing the space equitably, and any concerns regarding scheduling or fairness are always open for community discussion at the Calendar Parties.

  • Yes, bringing or offering your own music and sound equipment is absolutely allowed and highly welcomed. To coordinate resource sharing, you can use the physical noticeboard inside the space to post about what equipment you can offer or what you need to borrow.

  • Yes, the journey of the Night Time Co-op is being intentionally documented as we go so that others can actively learn from our wins and mistakes, allowing it to be used as an open model for future initiatives. Dr. Richael Connolly, an academic with an interest in degrowth and local economies, will be documenting the project. Additionally, artist and researcher Dearbhla Baker, who is completing a work placement with My Goodness, will be recording, researching, filming, and taking photos as part of her PhD. Our structural transparency agreement naturally lends itself to this process, and anyone else in the community is entirely welcome to take part in further documentation if they wish.
